SunSirs: Rise of PV Plus Storage as the New Industry Standard

The energy storage sector is accelerating its development. Data released by the National Energy Administration shows that by the end of the third quarter of this year, China's new energy storage installed capacity has exceeded 100 million kilowatts, more than 30 times compared to the end of the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, and the installed capacity accounts for more than 40% of the global total installed capacity, jumping to the first place in the world.

Energy storage, as an important consumption method for new energy power generation such as photovoltaic and wind power, has become a key layout track for leading photovoltaic companies.

Recently, the information released on the website of the Shaanxi Provincial Market Supervision Bureau showed that Longji Green Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Longji Green Energy") plans to obtain about 61.9998% of the voting rights of Suzhou Jingkong Energy Technology Co., Ltd. through equity acquisition, capital increase and shareholding and voting rights entrustment, and achieve separate control of this energy storage "unicorn" enterprise.

At this point, the top five photovoltaic companies in global module shipments last year have all entered the energy storage race.

"Due to the spatial mismatch between the distribution of wind and solar new energy resources and power demand, and the instability of wind and solar power generation, with the continuous and rapid growth of photovoltaic (PV) installed capacity, the consumption of photovoltaic power faces challenges, and the curtailment rate of PV power has started to rise significantly in the past two years." Wang Tieshan, director of the Industrial Development and Investment Research Center of Xi'an Polytechnic University, said in an interview with a reporter from the Securities Daily that energy storage has become an important support for promoting the consumption of new energy, improving the safe and stable operation of the power system, and enhancing the level of power supply guarantee. Especially against the backdrop of the continuous increase in PV installed capacity, energy storage can effectively address the intermittent and fluctuating issues of PV power generation and improve energy utilization efficiency.

In this context, "photovoltaic + energy storage" has become a standard configuration for leading photovoltaic companies.

In addition to Longi Green Energy, Tongwei Stock Co., Ltd., a leading photovoltaic company that has been deeply involved in the multi-crystalline silicon, battery, and component fields (hereinafter referred to as "Tongwei Stock"), also quietly laid out energy storage in June this year. Tongwei New Energy Technology (Jintang) Co., Ltd. was established on June 26 this year, and the company's business scope includes energy storage technology services, energy conservation service contracts, etc.

And the leading companies such as Jinko Energy Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Jinko Energy"), JA Solar Technology Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "JA Solar Technology"), and Trina Solar International Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Trina Solar") have also been involved in the energy storage industry for a long time. According to Infolink data, Jinko Energy ranked first in the global photovoltaic module shipment list in 2024, JA Solar Technology and Longi Green Energy were tied for second place, Trina Solar ranked fourth, and Tongwei ranked fifth.

"Photovoltaic and energy storage integration has become an inevitable trend in the energy transition and a key path to building a new power system," Qu Fan, a securities investment consultant at Wanlian Securities, told the reporter of Security Daily. Photovoltaic and energy storage integrated projects will be transformed from "optional" to "essential", and from "auxiliary power source" to "main power source".

"The current bottleneck in the development of photovoltaics is consumption. If energy storage is combined with photovoltaics, the rate of photovoltaic power waste will be greatly reduced, and the market space for photovoltaics will be further opened, which will further promote the development of energy storage," Qu Fang said.

Recently, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration issued the "Guiding Opinions on Promoting the Consumption and Regulation of New Energy", which clearly states that by 2030, a multi-level new energy consumption and regulation system that is highly coordinated and efficient will be established, continuously ensuring that new energy is smoothly connected to the grid, diversified in use, and operates efficiently. The new electricity demand will mainly be met by new renewable energy power generation. Meet the reasonable consumption needs of new energy added every year in China, and help achieve the goal of carbon peaking.

In Wang Tieshan's view, the proposal of this goal marks that the focus of China's new energy development has shifted from pursuing installed capacity to comprehensively enhancing the consumption capacity, which further expands the development space for the entire new energy industry chain, including photovoltaic and energy storage.

At the recently held "8th China International Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Industry Congress and Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Industry Financing and Investment Forum", Lv Jianzhong, Deputy Director of the Sustainable Development Management Special Committee of the Chinese Society for Management Science, stated that the photovoltaic and energy storage industry is at a critical juncture in the transition from "policy-driven" to "market-driven", and the integration of photovoltaic and energy storage has shown strong growth momentum. In 2025, the market size of photovoltaic and energy storage charging integration is expected to reach about 500 billion RMB, and it is expected to exceed 2 trillion RMB by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate of over 30%.

"Photovoltaic and energy storage integration is an important direction for the demand-side reform of new energy. With technological breakthroughs and policy support, photovoltaic and energy storage integration is expected to become a core component of the new energy system," Qu Fang said.
