According to China's Ministry of Natural Resources, the country has now established over 5,100 provincial-level and above green mines, achieving significant results in the conservation and intensive use of mineral resources, ecological restoration, energy conservation, and emission reduction.
The Ministry stated that in the first ten months of this year, China added over 300 new provincial-level or higher green mines. To date, the country has established 1,054 national-level green mines and 4,055 provincial-level green mines, accounting for 40.8% of all licensed and operational mines, demonstrating positive progress in green mine development.
In advancing green mine development, China has established numerous energy and resource bases and nationally planned mining areas, promoting more intensive and scaled resource exploitation. Large and medium-sized mines now account for over 50% of the total number and over 80% of production capacity nationwide. Innovative processes, technologies, and equipment have comprehensively enhanced resource utilization levels.
Currently, green mines are actively reevaluating low-grade and associated ores, leading to substantial increases in resource reserves. Newly identified cobalt and rhenium reserves have surged by over 100%, while nickel and indium reserves have grown by more than 30%. This transformation has turned dormant deposits into viable resources and expanded small mines into larger operations, effectively extending mine lifespans.
The Ministry of Natural Resources stated that the current green mine development targets are clear: by the end of 2028, 90% of large-scale and 80% of medium-scale operational mines must meet green mine standards. Moving forward, local authorities must comprehensively advance the construction and operation of new mines in strict compliance with green mine standards. Operating mines should accelerate green upgrades and renovations, while those yet to initiate construction must be urged to commence promptly. Concurrently, building upon existing industry standards, efforts will intensify to formulate and release standards for open-pit mining, geothermal mineral water, and marine oil and gas sectors, further refining the green mine standard system.
