According to Xinhua News Agency, China's lithium battery industry achieved a total output value exceeding 1.2 trillion yuan in 2024. Among these, power battery production reached 826 gigawatt-hours, marking a 22.4% year-on-year increase; exports grew by 29.2% year-on-year, with the industry maintaining its global leadership for eight consecutive years. To meet supply chain demands, China is accelerating the development of a safe, efficient, and green power battery transportation system.
Global Leadership in Power Battery Industry
As the core pillar supporting the automotive industry's development, China's new energy vehicle power lithium battery sector is entering a new phase of simultaneous scale and quality advancement.
Data indicates that in 2024, China's new energy vehicle production and sales surpassed the 10 million unit milestone for the first time. Nationwide power battery installations reached approximately 548.4 GWh in 2024, a 41.5% year-on-year increase. Data from the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance shows that China's cumulative lithium-ion battery exports reached 197.1 GWh in 2024, a 29.2% year-on-year increase.
China's power battery technology roadmap has entered a new phase of diversified parallel development, featuring lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium batteries as mainstream technologies, accelerated commercialization of sodium-ion batteries, and ongoing exploration of semi-solid/solid-state battery technologies.
Addressing Bottlenecks in Power Battery Transportation
As the power lithium battery industry accelerates into high gear, the logistics supply chain faces new opportunities for high-quality development alongside significant challenges in ensuring safe and efficient transportation. Ten government departments, including the Ministry of Transport, have pledged to fundamentally resolve transportation bottlenecks for power lithium batteries by 2027.
China is making comprehensive efforts in the power battery transportation sector
In transportation services, trial rail transport of power lithium batteries has commenced. Regarding transportation safety management, illegal transport activities are being investigated and penalized according to law. Concerning transportation standards and regulations, efforts are underway to establish standards such as technical requirements for power lithium battery transport safety and multimodal transport, technical requirements for lithium battery rail transport, and technical requirements for the safe transport of lithium batteries by ship. China is also actively participating in the formulation of international transport rules for power lithium batteries.
In 2024, China's power lithium battery transport volume exceeded 10 million tons, breaking away from a single-mode transport structure. In March 2025, a train carrying lithium batteries arrived in Nanning, Guangxi from Jingmen, Hubei.
In the road sector, establish safe and efficient logistics channels for power lithium batteries.
In aviation, China's lithium battery air transport volume reached 645,000 tons in 2024, marking a 21.26% year-on-year increase.
For waterways, China's first technical standard for the safe maritime transport of lithium batteries has been issued and implemented by the Ministry of Transport.
