SunSirs: Daily Coke Output Rises Month-on-Month in Most Production Areas Nationwide in September
October 31 2025 14:45:35()

According to China Energy Network, provincial production data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows that in September 2025, the top five coke-producing regions collectively produced 23.693 million tons of coke, accounting for 55.7% of the national total—a 0.1 percentage point increase from the previous month.

In September, national coke output reached 42.556 million tons, marking an 8.0% year-on-year increase but a 0.1% month-on-month decrease. Based on this, the average daily coke output in September was calculated at 1.42 million tons, a 3.2% month-on-month increase, indicating robust actual production momentum for the month.

Provincial production data shows that in September, the top five provinces/regions by coke output were, in descending order: Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Hebei, Xinjiang, and Shaanxi. Shanxi's coke output was 2.1 times that of Inner Mongolia, which ranked second.

During the month, Xinjiang surpassed Shaanxi to rise to fourth place, with output exceeding 3 million tons for the second consecutive month—reaching the highest monthly level so far this year.

Specifically:

- Shanxi produced 8.674 million tons of coke in September, down 0.5% month-on-month, accounting for 20.4% of national output.

- Inner Mongolia produced 4.218 million tons, down 1.1% month-on-month, accounting for 9.9%.

Hebei's output was 3.77 million tons, up 1.3% month-on-month, accounting for 8.9%. Xinjiang's output was 3.637 million tons, up 7.9% month-on-month, accounting for 8.5%. Shaanxi's coke output was 3.394 million tons, down 5.9% month-on-month, accounting for 8.0%.

Among the remaining regions outside the top five producers, all recorded coke output below 3 million tons that month. In September, Shandong, the sixth-ranked producer, manufactured 2.521 million tons of coke, a 2.8% decrease from the previous month.

In terms of month-on-month changes, nearly 60% of the 27 production regions saw declines in coke output. Shaanxi recorded the largest decrease at 5.9%, also accounting for the highest reduction volume of 213,000 tons.

Regions reporting month-on-month increases in coke output were relatively few. Tianjin recorded the largest percentage increase at 113.5%, while Xinjiang saw the highest absolute increase of 265,000 tons. Fujian's coke output remained unchanged month-on-month.

The slight month-on-month decline in national coke output in September may be attributed to fewer production days. From the perspective of daily production levels, coke output increased month-on-month in most regions during September, accounting for nearly 80% of the total.

Starting in late August, coke plants in some regions began implementing production restrictions ahead of the military parade. Following the parade's conclusion in early September, environmental controls on the supply side eased, allowing coke plants to resume production. Coupled with earlier price reductions on coking coal that yielded profit margins, coke plants saw relatively favorable profitability and strong production willingness, gradually releasing coke output.

Although coke profits were eroded in late September due to weakening coke prices, rebounding coking coal prices, and maintenance activities, which impacted some production, the upcoming National Day holiday spurred steel mills to restock ahead of the break. This boosted coke production and supported high supply levels.

Since October, coke prices have entered an upward trend. Coupled with high-level pig iron output, this has boosted coke producers' willingness to increase production. However, environmental restrictions, maintenance activities, and losses have simultaneously imposed significant constraints on production. Therefore, a month-on-month decline in October coke output cannot be ruled out at this stage.

From January to September, China's cumulative coke output reached 377.16 million tons, up 3.5% year-on-year. Shanxi Province accounted for 76.519 million tons, a 12.7% increase, representing 20.3% of the national total.

On October 31, SunSirs' benchmark coke price stood at 1,426.25 yuan per ton, marking a 1.60% increase compared to the beginning of the month (1,403.75 yuan per ton).
