The Fuzhou Municipal Bureau of Ecology and Environment has formally approved Wanhua Chemical (Fujian) Isocyanate Co., Ltd.'s technical upgrade and capacity expansion project for its 1.5 million tons/year MDI facility. This significant initiative further solidifies Wanhua Chemical's leading position in the global MDI market.

The project will implement technological upgrades to the existing 800,000-ton-per-year MDI facility, expanding key equipment capacity to match a 1.5 million-ton-per-year scale. The scope includes comprehensive upgrades across core production processes—MDI refrigerant, condensation, photochemical reactions, and separation—alongside modifications and expansions to supporting utilities and auxiliary facilities.

According to the plan, this upgrade will add 700,000 tons/year of MDI capacity, while also producing 340,500 tons/year of HCl and 2,600 tons/year of methanol as by-products. This layout fully demonstrates Wanhua Chemical's increasingly mature technical capabilities and large-scale operational capacity in MDI production. Construction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026. Upon completion, Wanhua Chemical's global MDI production capacity will increase from the current 3.8 million tons/year to 4.5 million tons/year.

Global MDI demand grows at 4-5% annually, with China accounting for 70% of new demand (driven by automotive, home appliances, and construction). By 2026, global demand is projected to reach ~16 million tons, with Wanhua's capacity utilization rate potentially reaching 95%. Wanhua Chemical's capacity expansion will further solidify its position as the world's largest MDI producer
