According to the latest data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), the sales of passenger cars in the EU market increased by 1.6% to 926,581 units in May 2025. But the cumulative sales in the first five months decreased by 0.6% year-on-year.
In the first five months of this year, the market share of pure electric vehicles in the European Union was 15.4%, which is still far from reaching the expected level. The popularity of hybrid electric vehicles continues to grow and remains the most popular type of power among buyers.
As of May, pure electric vehicles accounted for 15.4% of the total market share in the European Union, an increase from the low baseline of 12.1% in the same period of 2024. The registration volume of hybrid vehicles continues to soar, occupying 35.1% of the market share and still being the first choice for EU consumers. At the same time, the total market share of gasoline and diesel vehicles decreased from 48.5% in the same period of 2024 to 38.1%.
Electric vehicle
In the first five months, the sales of new electric vehicles reached 701,089 units, accounting for 15.4% of the EU market share. Among the four major markets in the European Union, three markets (accounting for 62% of all electric vehicle registrations) achieved growth: Germany (+43.2%), Belgium (+26.7%), and the Netherlands (+6.7%). In sharp contrast, sales in France decreased by 7.1%.
The data also shows that the number of new registrations of hybrid electric vehicles in the EU has increased to 1,601,090, mainly due to growth in four major markets: France (+38.3%), Spain (+34.9%), Italy (+13.8%), and Germany (+12.1%). Hybrid electric vehicles currently account for 35.1% of the EU market share.
The registered number of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles has reached 375,182. This is due to sales growth in major markets such as Germany (+52.8%) and Spain (+66.6%). Therefore, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles currently account for 8.2% of the total number of registered vehicles in the European Union, higher than 7.1% since May 2024.
In addition, looking at the year-on-year changes in May alone, pure electric vehicles grew by 25%, hybrid electric vehicles grew by 16%, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles grew strongly for the third consecutive month, with an increase of 46.9%.
