SunSirs: Australian Coking Coal Export decreased 5% yearly in the First Quarter of 2021

May 12 2021 15:41:05     SunSirs (Selena)

According to the data released by the Australian Bureau of statistics, from January to March 2021, Australia exported 40.5 million tons of coking coal, down 4.7% from the same period last year. Among them, 14 million tons of coking coal was exported in March, which was the same as the same period last year, with a month on month growth of 9.7%.

In the first quarter of this year, India became Australia's largest coking coal export destination because of China's continued restrictions on Australian coal imports. During this period, Australia exported 14.8 million tons of coking coal to India, a year-on-year increase of 45%. However, covid-19 is rampant in India, and the new infections are on the top of four hundred thousand people in. It will affect India's economy and steel, building materials and other related industries. If the demand for coking coal in the country is further weakened, the coking coal export in Australia is expected to be greatly affected, and the decline in the coal price will probably increase sharply as compared with the export of thermal coal.

According to the loading and unloading data of coal shipping ships compiled by coalmint, an Indian platform company, Australia's thermal coal exports fell 4% in January, 7% in February and 20.4% in March.

In addition, according to the Australian Bureau of statistics data quoted by Argus, from January to March 2021, Australia's thermal coal export volume was 45.08 million tons, down 13.3% from the same period last year. According to this calculation, combined with the export volume of coking coal, Australia's total coal export volume in the first quarter of this year was about 85.6 million tons, 9.3 million tons less than that in the same period of last year, about 10% lower than that in the same period of last year.
